Once a week, Jantine orders all the vegetables and fruit, which she stores in the Groundfridge. Luckily, there's plenty of space. Everything prepared is organic and vegetarian, because if you work hard, you deserve a good and healthy meal.
How long have you been using the Groundfridge?
"Since I started working here, about two and a half years ago. It has truly become part of my daily routine."
What do you store in the Groundfridge?
"Pretty much everything. Especially a lot of vegetables and fruit, but also large quantities of homemade products. For example, once we all made eighty jars of kimchi, and they all fit in the Groundfridge. We also make sauerkraut, grow shiitake mushrooms, and if there's leftover food, I just put entire oven dishes in there overnight."
"And if we have a party, the wine and beer go in there too. Beer tastes really good when it comes out of the Groundfridge."
How do you keep track of everything stored in it?
"I always take photos of everything I put in. When I'm in the kitchen later, I just check my phone and I know exactly what's still in the Groundfridge. That works perfectly for me."
How do you get all the products from the Groundfridge to the kitchen?
"That's still a challenge here. We have a shell path in the garden, and you can't drive a large cart over it. So, I transport everything by wheelbarrow to the lift and then to the kitchen. When loading, I also do it by full wheelbarrow."
Do you ever run out of space?
"Yes. But then I use the space in the middle. I place the crates on the floor and stack them. It's a bit harder to move around then, but it works fine."
What's it like having to go outside for your ingredients in winter?
"When it rains, it's naturally less pleasant. I prefer doing it when the sun is shining." 😊
Do you use the Groundfridge for anything else?
"Oh yes! We once turned it into a karaoke bar. We hung up colored lights, set up a speaker and a microphone, closed the door, and sang karaoke at the top of our lungs. Nobody heard us. That was really a lot of fun."
